Hair Transplant in Bangalore: Frequently Asked Questions
These are the questions our doctors are asked most often. Each answer is written to stand on its own, so you can read only the ones relevant to you.
About the procedure
What is a hair transplant?
A hair transplant moves individual follicular units from the donor area at the back and sides of the scalp, where hair resists pattern hair loss, into areas that have thinned or receded. The transplanted follicles keep their original characteristics and continue to grow in the new location.
What is DHT?
DHT stands for Direct Hair Transplant. It is a modified form of FUE developed by the Co-Founders of Eugenix, and it is the technique performed at our clinics.
How long does a hair transplant take?
Session length depends on how many grafts are being placed. Your doctor will give you a time for your own case at consultation.
Is a hair transplant painful?
Local anaesthetic is used throughout the procedure. Most patients describe the day as long rather than painful. Some tenderness in the days afterwards is normal and is managed with the medication your doctor prescribes.
Is a hair transplant safe?
A hair transplant is a surgical procedure carried out under local anaesthetic. Like any surgery it carries risks, which your doctor will discuss with you at consultation. At Eugenix every procedure is doctor-led, meaning the lead surgeon plans the design, makes every recipient slit by hand and sets every technical parameter, and it is performed under sterile OT conditions.
About candidacy
Am I a candidate for a hair transplant?
Candidacy depends on the pattern and stage of your loss, whether it has stabilised, the density of your donor area, your age and your general health. It is assessed at consultation, and our doctors will tell you if a transplant is not appropriate for your case.
Is there an age limit?
There is no fixed limit, but age affects planning. Loss in a patient in their twenties is often still progressing, so a plan has to account for hair that has not been lost yet as well as hair already gone.
Can women have hair transplants?
Yes, though female hair loss is assessed differently. Medical causes are investigated before surgery is considered, because female pattern loss and diffuse thinning have different causes and different appropriate treatments.
How many grafts will I need?
Graft count depends on the area being covered, the density being aimed for and what your donor area can supply. It is determined by examining the scalp, so it cannot be assessed accurately from a photograph.
About recovery
How long is recovery after a hair transplant?
Initial healing takes about a week. Most patients return to work at around seven days. Visible results follow a longer timeline, with new growth from month 4 and full results at 10 to 12 months.
When can I wash my hair?
Gentle cleansing of the transplanted area may begin from around day three, as your clinic instructs. The first full head wash is at around day seven, after which a normal washing routine resumes. Water is poured rather than sprayed, kept lukewarm, and the area is not rubbed.
Why is my transplanted hair falling out?
Shedding between days 30 and 90 is expected and is not a sign of failure. The follicle remains in place and enters a resting phase before producing new hair, which begins to appear at month 4.
When can I go back to work?
Most patients return to work about seven days after the procedure.
When can I exercise again?
Return to exercise is phased rather than all at once. Light activity such as walking resumes from about day seven. Moderate physical strain is generally safe from around two weeks. Full training, including heavy lifting, contact sports and high intensity work, is generally safe from four to six weeks, once the grafts are firmly anchored.
Swimming and chlorinated water are left until around four weeks.
About results and timeline
When will I see results?
New growth begins at month 4. Density builds through months 5 to 9, and full results are seen at 10 to 12 months. The crown takes longer, reaching its full result over 12 to 15 months.
Is a hair transplant permanent?
Transplanted follicles come from an area that is genetically resistant to pattern hair loss, so they continue to grow. Hair that was not transplanted can continue to thin, which is why a plan accounts for future loss as well as current loss.
Will I need more than one session?
Some cases are completed in one session and others are planned in stages, particularly at advanced grades where donor supply has to be allocated carefully. This is discussed and agreed at consultation before any procedure begins.
Will the result look natural?
Natural appearance comes from hairline design, the angle and direction each graft is placed at, and how density is distributed across the scalp. These are surgical judgement calls made by the lead surgeon, who plans the design, makes every recipient slit by hand and sets every technical parameter.
